Melissa Fine's dives into sophomore year at Berklee College of Music with a double major
Updated: Nov 26, 2019
Melissa Fine is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter who is now in her second year at Berklee College of Music. She is double majoring in production/engineering and songwriting. She is coming off a very exciting summer, including being nominated for New Act of the Year for the New England Music Awards, and also playing a starring role in the production of RENT, put on by the Uncommon Theater Company located in Foxborough, MA. For almost 40 years, the Un-Common Theatre Company has provided a high quality, inclusive, and collaborative theatrical learning experience for children, teens and young adults.
Melissa experiments with intricate layering and harmonies, a technique that brings cohesion to her diverse writing style. At 14, Melissa dropped her debut album, Here To Stay, which landed 43rd on the iTunes New Pop Releases Chart within the first week of publication. Her drive and dedication for growth as an artist shines through with each new endeavor. It's no surprise that she is now the Vice-President of the songwriters club at Berklee College of Music which has over 60 members. She loves connecting with other songwriters, offering and receiving critiques to help better each other's songs. What is most impressive is how she carves out time to focus on her own music career outside the academic demands.
One of her personal goals this year is to play out with her new band she formed at Berklee. They are beginning to get a set list together, and plan some shows. She has always been a solo performer, so to hear the band playing her original songs creates a new wave of excitement. She's looking forward to getting the band gelling and booking their first show.
After two albums, Here to Stay and most recently Into the Storm, Melissa is planning on getting back in the studio to release some of her new music, with "Holy Water" first on deck. The song, written with Sophie Lasher, was her first co-writing collaboration. A recent posting of the song on Instagram got over 400 views in a matter of days along with over 40 comments..."Voice is super and soulful", "I'd take a six hour drive to come see you.", "One of the greatest voices I've heard of people I've met at Berklee so far."
She has had a fun summer spending time with family, writing new songs and even traveling to Nashville, TN. She's been back at Berklee for a few weeks now and the pressure is on. With two majors, songwriters club and her personal music goals, she'll be one busy lady. She's excited to see what the end of 2019 and 2020 have to offer. Among her short-term goals is to perform at a Sofar Sounds event, and to get a cafe tour around Boston organized. Sofar is a global community dedicated to supporting artists throughout their career, connecting more than 20,000 artists to a worldwide network of music lovers and promoters.
